Metallography was born in the early 19th century when Widmansteatten used nitric acid solution to etch Iron meteorite slices, observed the regular distribution of flaky Fe Ni austenite, and observed the exotic Iron meteorite.

     The term Metallography first appeared in the New English Dictionary of Oxford Metallography in 1721.

     The development of Metallography benefited from the outbreak of the Second Industrial Revolution in the middle of the 19th century. New methods of steelmaking by converter (1856) and open hearth furnace (1864) were introduced one after another. The price of steel dropped significantly and the output soared. At that time, there was a major project to build a railway, with a large amount of rail usage and frequent accidents of breakage. The practical needs of production have promoted research on the fracture surface, macrostructure, and internal microstructure of steel.
